Existential doubt. Virtue and vice. Business. What do the above mentioned things have in common? They appear to fall into dissimilar categories. Existential doubt seems to hail from the field of philosophy. Vice and virtue could be topics discussed in a psychological overview of human behavior. Business is about the exchange of goods and services for money. What do these things have in common? It is true, business is an activity in which goods and services are offered, at a price. Yes, science utilizes a rational process for problem solving. Yet, without the power of imagination there would be far fewer ideas to test. Creative imagination is not the enemy of rational investigation; it is the bedrock upon which it rests.
It works something like this. We are taking a stroll. A thought comes into our heads. We begin to think about it. Maybe it is a solution to something that afflicts us all. This is the proverbial light bulb moment. It is as if a light goes off in our heads enlightening us as to how to surmount a challenge. This is the imagination at work.
Once we have the idea, we must test it to see if it works. This is where the scientific process comes in. We must put our idea through a rigorous process of trial and error. We must be analytical. Clearly, the creative imagination and analytical thinking are not at loggerheads. Instead, they complement each other.
Some people are considered to have vivid imaginations, while others are thought to be less imaginative. Whether this is due to nature or nurture, I do not know. However, imagination -like anything else in life- can be cultivated and improved upon.
The key to utilizing the imagination is to get beyond the process of imagining once a worthwhile idea suggests itself. Nothing is sadder than a person coming up with a great idea only to abandon it because making it take form seems too daunting a process.
To improve our lives we need to start imagining and stop imagining. By that I mean we need to give ourselves permission to imagine and envision things. We need to allow our creativity to blossom, rather than kill it off by the weight of self-criticism. Once our imaginations have yielded fruit though, we need to stop imagining and start doing.

There is no ability a person has that is more powerful than that of imagination.
Our universe is ruled by Mother Nature and Father Time. Father Time dictates to us that our lives are not unlimited. Mother Nature demonstrates to us that human power is limited when compared to earthquakes, blizzards, tornados and hurricanes. Can anyone say Katrina?
And yet, as powerful as time and nature are, human beings consistently come up with ways to mitigate their power. Write a comment |

For a goal to mean anything, it has to be specific. Many times, people starting out in business will claim to have the goal of being successful. However, being successful is so nebulous a goal it is almost like having no goal at all. After all, how many people begin any endeavor in the hopes of failing? Wanting to succeed is axiomatic. Since we all want to be successful in business, we must first define what success means to us. Then we can go about putting together a plan to accomplish what we want to. Write a comment |
