In a one week span, in the United States, four well-known people died.  Their deaths reverberated in different ways and, perhaps, for different reasons.  We extend our condolences to the family and friends of Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Jackson and Billie Mays.  May they all rest in peace.

The deaths of these individuals has created a stir in the media.  The passing of Michael Jackson in particular has ignited worldwide sorrow, nostalgia, interest in his music and general curiosity.

Michael Jackson was arguably the biggest pop music star in the world. With his passing, he joins Elvis Presley as an absolutely iconic figure in modern cultural history.  Farrah Fawcett was a television and movie star, best known for her role in the Charlie’s Angels television series of the 1970s.  She was renowned for her beauty and charm.

School Services for Non-English Speakers
by Remedios Aguirre Sullivan

As a parent of two ELL (English Language Learners) in the United States, I have had the first hand experience of being the recipient of ELL services in two of the school districts in the area where we live. Providing a “go to person” for those who are not native speakers of English, appropriate classroom support for students and bilingual communications are key components to aid in the academic achievement of ELL students. As a parent, I appreciate efforts to foster the successful integration of newcomers to our communities. However, there is still much more that can be done.

I’ve had a dual experience when it comes to ELL services: as a parent of ELL students, as well as translating and interpreting for a school district. You must be wondering how that is possible.  Here’s how – I was raised bilingually and already spoke English when my daughters and I moved to the U.S.  My daughters on the other hand started their English language learning when we moved to the Midwest from Mexico. During our first year in this country, I worked as a translator at a school district. As a parent, even when I specify I do speak English, I sometimes receive communications from my daughters’ schools in Spanish.

Summer is Everywhere

Only when you experience a long cold winter lasting for months, can you understand the joy a little bit of sun can bring.  Of course, we all love a day at the beach; a walk in the park on a sunny afternoon, no matter where we live, but let me put it this way.  If a person includes chocolate in their daily diet and another is on a strict diet that only allows eating chocolate once a month, will the second person will really look forward to the next “chocolate day”?  Probably so.

There are two good things about winter: it comes to an end, and it gives summer a more intense flavor.

Any place is a good place to enjoy a little sun, so come on, get out there!
